Today we did a workshop to learn the basic features and UI of unity. I had previously tried out unity in the past as I was curious into making a game with my friend and was looking for a suitable game engine. In the workshop we only looked into creating 2d games with sprites. Whilst we didn’t get into sprite sheets, we were able to use premade assets and code from the unity store in order to create a basic game with a health and scoring system. In this game you control a spaceship and pick up collectables whilst avoiding asteroids. From this I found that unity is a very quick and easy tool for quickly building up games. However, in regards to this, we only had a very basic look at the program and didn’t look into any programming or sprite animation. Overall, however I was impressed with the result that I was able to make, and am looking forward to the next workshop where we will learn to use 3d assets. In regards to my project however, I am not sure if I will be using unity to make any demos as I am already committed to the current outcome. Where Unity will be most useful is in the stages after my project where I go on to study game arts and design.
