For this peer feedback session, I came in with having completed my animation, with the next step being rendering out the trailer. However, when completing this I suddenly came into the problem that the close up shot of Adam was taking far over 30 min per frame to render. This was because of Adam’s hair sim having far more complexity as the camera got closer to it. I always knew that this would be a possibility but, based on my other test renders, I thought that it wouldn’t be as significant to the render time as it was. Because of this I went back to a previous solution that I had for if this problem ever arises, which was using something called hair cards. These are flat plains that are modelled into the style of hair but use alpha textures to create the illusion of detailed hair. This allowed me to significantly decrease the render time but having to do it so late in the production made me concerned that they would look out of place. As a result, this was the main thing that I was looking for feedback on during the session. Based on what was said no one really noticed until I told them. This is a good sign that the new hair system looks fairly believable, especially in the low light. As a result; I am now able to confidently move on to the rendering process of my animation. Based on the test renders I did and my loose calculations it should take 4.5 days. In which time I am going to take a small break and work on my laptop to finish any outstanding parts of the project such as my game bible.
