In todays drawing session we practiced shading by looking into photographers Edward Weston and Gyula Halász who specialise in high contrast black and white photography. As the photos were fairly detailed, we only tried to capture basic essence of the images, which resulted in me producing more abstract drawings. In this session we were encouraged to try different art supplies so I decided to try water colour which I have had bad experiences with in the past. The result of this was that I found it very difficult to capture details and definition in my paintings. To counter this, halfway into the drawing session I started to just use the water colours as a base for the shading and added detail/definition by drawing with pen on top. Whilst this approach didn’t result in refined outcomes, it did give me the definition and contrast that my drawings were lacking. Overall, I found the drawing session to be very interesting, however I still think that painting and proper shading is a major weakness of mine when it comes to drawing.
