This week I spent most of my time finalising my project, with the one workshop being geared towards laying it out in Indesign. As it was primarily based around being a concept piece for a game involving a McGuffin, I found myself rather than creating one highly detailed render, making multiple lower detail renders in order to expand the visual design of the conceptual game. This meant however that I couldn’t devote all my time to a single high-quality artwork like in the previous project as I had other responsibilities during this process. Because of this I did feel that the overall quality of the art work was lower than the last project however this doesn’t necessarily matter as it wasn’t the focus of the final outcome. Apposed to this through, I do feel that the fact that some people thought the crown material resembled wood more than stone was a major flaw as it failed to convey a major point of the crowns design unbreakable and eternal.
Outside of this I do think that my game concept and story were well developed for a conceptual project, with many of my peers agreeing. It was mentioned however that I could try and add character designs and landscape concept art in order to better represent the game concept visually. I probably could have achieved this if I hadn’t relied on 3d art as much and tried to push myself to use digital 2d programs to make concept art. The reason that I didn’t however was because I wasn’t confident in my ability to produce quality art that could convey the game idea using that median. Beyond this however, I do also think that I should try and explore different art styles in 3d as due to my reliance on premade materials and previous hyper-real models as assets I have limited my art style somewhat to a realistic approach. As a result, I would like to try a more stylised approach during the next project.
