Blitzo the imp is the main protagonist of the animated dark comedy series Helluva Boss, created by Vivienne Medrano (aka “VivziePop”). The characters first appearance was in the piolet episode for Hazbin Hotel which is another series set in the same world. in this world we follow the daily lives of the citizens of hell.
Originally Blitzo was meant to be a side character in the main series who ran an assassination organisation and would act as comic relief. However, VivziePop decided that the main show had plenty of comedic characters already so instead decided to take Blitzo’s character and develop him into the main focus of his own series, changing the colour scheme and character design in the process.
Blitzo is the head of his start-up company IMP which complete assassinations in the living world using a grimoire he gained from having sex with Stolas, another prominent character in the show. He is shown to be extremely violent and sadistic in his work, lacking any real moral compass. This is fairly typical for the dividends of hell. However, Blitzo is also shown to have an obsessive ego and invasive personality when it comes to his employees lives, claiming to view then as a dysfunctional family despite him being very destructive towards most of his relationships shown throughout the series. This is hinted to be caused by deep fear of not being loved, with reference to his past as an entertainer ending is failure as no one enjoyed his jokes. This is also hinted to be a familial problem as he comes from a history of entertainers, suggesting that he feels alienated from them by his failings. He has even been shown to go so far as to make the ‘O’ in his name silent in order to distance himself from his past.
This need to be loved collimates in his decision to adopt Luna when she was 18. Luna is one of the few characters in the show the Blitzo has clear affection for, with him demonstrating clear parental love for her despite the estranged circumstances of their relationship.
For his character design Blitzo takes clear inspiration from serpents and goats for his demonic appearance. He is also show to have cat like qualities with him purring during the piolet. Outside of this he is also shown to have very extravagant features in relation to his past as an entertainer. This includes his cloths, guided flintlock, as well as the symbol on his head that resembles a playing card suite and blotch of white on his face that references his past as a clown. Ultimately though, for his design as a likeable antihero it is his clear struggles in finding love due to his own nature that makes the viewer emphasise with him as a character.
