1 to 1 Tutor Feedback Session

Tutor Feedback Notes:

ree

I had a 1 to 1 feedback session with my tutor Kat about my FMP and future university paths. I mainly ask for the 1 to 1 as I was thinking about switching my university course for next year from computer animation to game design. This is because whilst participating on this course and doing my FMP I found a greater interest in game design than I had before. After we had discussed the course options and what they would be like, I used the opportunity to gain further feedback on my FMP project.

During our discussion I explained the core concept of my project and the narrative and worldbuilding that I was implementing. Kat said that the world and narrative concepts were very interesting, but warned me not to get too stuck up on the world building. She also suggested that for my final outcome, I should try to make a trailer as it would better demonstrate the narrative component of my game idea. For this I thought that she made a good point, however I was a little hesitant since I was working in CGI. This meant that making a competent looking trailer would take far more assets and production time than the small opening menu animation that I was going to attempt. However, my game concept does have two distinct advantages for this. Firstly, is that it is a CRPG which normally have very zoomed out cameras. This means that I need to spend less detail on animation and character models as they will be fairly small on the screen. The second advantage is that the dream like nature of my game means that I can mesh elements that don’t have much aesthetic similarities together whilst still having it make sense. This basically means that I can use various 3rd party assets in my project without the limitations of the assets not fitting each other in a cohesive sense. Because of this I am going to attempt to make a trailer for my game, using my previous idea as a backup of if it becomes to labour intensive to complete on time.

As an additional point, when I mentioned that my game was a CRPG, using Baldur’s gate as an example, Kat recommended that I used it in my research as reference for gameplay mechanics. As a result of this I am going to create a research page in my sketchbook, using Baldur’s gate and similar games as reference.
